The City of Puerto lguazu originated thanks of the falls of the lguazu river (Guaraní Language: Big Water), since almost one century, though the zone was inhabited from times remotes by the originals towns that lived in the same.
At moiety of the century XVI (1452), Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, in your traject from the region of the Brazil to Asunción of the Paraguay discovered the Fallss and nominated with the name of Santa María jumps. The region was inhabit by the guaraní town, a ethnical group that dedicated to the agriculture. In 1609 started the evangelism, realized by the jesuitics missionaries, a sacerdotal catholic roman order, that arrived at America for evangelized at the aborigens. The first touristic excursion, arrived to lguazu harbor in 1901; between theys, travelled Victoria Aguirre, who donated the necessary money, for open the first way, by land, between the city (that is funded in the intersection of the Iguazu and Parana river) and the Falls. There year signalize the start of the touristic activity in the Iguazu Falls. And is one date celebrated by the comunity of the region in tribute to Victoria Aguirre.
Puerto Iguazu is funded on september 10 of 1901 like Puerto Aguirre. In 1906 is built the first hotel and in 1913, the Nation constructed edifices for the Subprefectura, the Police, the radiotelephonic station, a primary school and others priorities. In 1934 started the trámites for the creaction of the Iguazu National Park, that finally concreted it on 1935. On 1939 started the urban design: two squares, a balcony of the river, The chapel, the postal, a hotel and commercials establishment. The other square, also to the river, was sorounded by the school, the museum and the house of first assistance, mientras que the Station of police, were in the way to falls. In april 24 of 1943, is created the municipality of Iguazu. In october of 1985 is built the internacional garden Tancredo Neves. The falls will be compose by 275 jumps, with hight between the 50 and 80 meters. In 1984 were declared Natural Patrimony of the Humanity by the UNESCO.
